Fifteen year homeowners from Cedar Mill recently finished their remodeling project on their open-floor dining room, kitchen, and lounge area. They managed to take the cramped, dark-toned design and turn it into a brighter, more spacious, and definitely more luxurious common room.
The most obvious transformation is the large kitchen island being placed in the center of the space. This island takes on the food preparation with an installed sink and stovetop and also serves to entertain guests who can be seated on the opposite side. The choice of Lumix Quartzite stone is not only beautiful but helps reflect light throughout the space. (Notice: Don’t miss the Sirius stove hood installed flush into the ceiling, which helps remove that claustrophobic feeling when cooking under a hanging hood.)
With the island area taking over all the kitchen functions, the dining area moved to the far wall in a way that creates better paths through the entire room. The cabinets were completely replaced with ones black Oregon walnut to keep a similar woodland tone to the previous design but they were moved to the wall opposite the backyard. You can see more cabinet and drawer space added to the island. Overall, this change of lowering the dark cabinets and facing the entering sunlight gives the room a naturally bright atmosphere. (Notice: The handles of the cabinets were custom-made to match the appliances.)
This project took place in Portland, Oregon. The designer was Fabian Genovesi of the Neil Kelly Company . It required three months to design and six months to install, costing a project between $200,000 and $500,000.
